INSTITUTE OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, DISEASE CONTROL AND RESEARCH (IEDCR)

MSc. in Applied Epidemiology (2024-2025) Field Epidemiology Training Program Bangladesh (FETP,B), Advanced (11th Cohort)

A unique 2-year training opportunity for government physicians and veterinarians with the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC).

Background

The goal of the FETPB is to strengthen the human capacity of the public health system of Bangladesh and produce the public health leaders of the future. Since 1980, US CDC has partnered with Ministries of Health and have produced more than 3,100 graduates from 80 countries. Many graduates obtain high-level leadership positions within the health system.

Successes

  • Led the public health responses for containment of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Led investigations of outbreaks including anthrax, Nipah virus, acute watery diarrhea, leptospirosis, influenza, suspected MERS-CoV, and many more!
  • Presented over 75 abstracts in public health findings to international audiences: Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference, SAFETYNET Scientific Conference, International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases (USA), EMPHNET Regional Conference,Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network Global Conference (Mexico)
  • Awarded international grants and had numbers of publications in peer-reviewed journals

Training

  • Classroom: courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, communications, and public health leadership & management
  • Field: conduct outbreak investigations, surveillance system evaluations and data analyses, disease control and prevention, research, reporting to decision-makers, and teaching

Benefits

  1. Graduation certificate granted by IEDCR and US CDC upon completion of the program
  2. Both current batches are enrolled in MSc in Applied Epidemiology

Criteria of Applicants

  1. Government physicians and veterinarians only 
  2. MBBS or DVM or BSc. Vet. Sci & A.H.
  3. Government deputation criteria will apply
  4. English proficiency – reading, writing, speaking, and understanding
  5. Computer proficiency
  6. Maximum age limit of 40 years
  7. Physically able to conduct fieldwork
  8. Willingness to travel, on occasion, on short notice within Bangladesh
  9. Willingness to work extended hours and weekends, as needed

 

Optional, but preferred criteria

  1. Advanced public health degree (MPH, MPhil, etc.) and/or post-graduate training or diploma

Selection Process

  1. Shortlisted applicants will attend a written examination for initial selection.
  2. Initially selected applicants will attend a Certificate Course on Introduction to Field Epidemiology and will receive a certificate of completion from IEDCR and US CDC
  3. Ten fellows will be selected for 2-years MSc. in Applied Epidemiology and FETP,B course
  4. Beginning of FETPB course in July 2024
